Our family loves to watch football! We’re gearing up for the Superbowl at our house. We’re planning a little party so I thought I’d put together a couple recipes and take them for a test run before the big game. One recipe I really like to make, and my family enjoys eating is Cheesy Bread. It’s a recipe I developed from several other recipes. I decided I could pair that with a couple dips and some chips for a great Superbowl football appetizer!
I like to make the cheesy bread in a football cake pan I found on clearance a couple years ago for $5.
I was heading out to Marsh Supermarkets to shop for the ingredients. They have a new Guiding Stars program to help guide you on your journey to good nutrition. I had never heard about the program until I was asked to participate in this shop. It does sound like a wonderful program. All the products in the store are marked with stars. One star is least healthy, and 3 stars are the products that are the most nutritious for the calories.
While I was at the Guiding Stars website checking out the program I found a couple dip recipes that sounded perfect to go with my southwest cheesy bread flavor. I decided to also make the Roasted Tomatillo Salsa and the Hummus 2 recipes they feature there. I just wish they had photos so I could see what the finished dips looked like. I love to see yummy food photos!
I checked the pantry and the fridge to see what ingredients I needed, made a list and headed out.
When I got to the store there was a slight problem. It was no longer a Marsh Supermarket. It had been renamed Main Street Market. A few minutes on the phone and I figured out they’re both owned by the same company. I was really disappointed when I didn’t see anything about the Guiding Stars program in the store. I was looking forward to seeing the program in action.
I went ahead and purchased all the ingredients I needed for my Superbowl appetizer and headed back home.
When I got home it was time to bake. I put together all the ingredients I would need for the cheesy bread.
Here’s the recipe:
Southwest Cheesy Bread
Bread Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
- 1 egg, well beaten
- 1 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons butter, melted
Directions:
1. Preheat the oven to 350`F.
2. Mix together the flour, baking powder, sugar, cumin, and chili powder.
3. Add in the egg, milk, and butter. Mix until all the ingredients are moist.
4. Fold in the cheese, save a sprinkle to put on top.
5. Pour the bread mixture into a greased and floured bread pan, or football cake pan if you want to make a football shaped bread.
6. Sprinkle the rest of the cheese on top and bake for about 30 minutes.
7. Once the bread is baked, turn it out onto a cooling rack to cool.
While the bread was cooling I made the hummus and the tomatillo salsa from the Guiding Stars website.
Here are the hummus ingredients. I had most of them in the pantry. We love hummus at our house, and it gets 2 stars on the Guiding Stars Program.
One of the ingredients, tahini, can sometimes be hard to find at the grocery. I usually find it in the ethnic, or health food sections. If you’re not familiar with it tahini has a slightly nutty flavor, and it separates like non-hydrogenated peanut butter. You’ll want to stir it before you add it to the hummus. I love the flavor so I added an extra tablespoon! It is a little high in fat and calories, but it’s the good kind of fat!
Here’s the ingredient list from the Guiding Stars website:
Hummus
Ingredients:
Source: Jennifer Reilly, R.D.
Ingredients
- 1 15-ounce can garbanzo beans, drained, liquid reserved
- 2 tablespoons tahini
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 3 green onions, chopped
- 1 tablespoon chopped garlic
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 cup roasted red peppers (optional)
I roasted the peppers, then gave all the vegetables a rough chop and threw them in the food processor.
A couple minutes in the food processor and I had hummus!
Then I put together all the ingredients for the tomatillo salsa. I can’t count, instead of 7 tomatillos I only had 6 in my bag when I got home! It still turned out tasty!
Roasted Tomatillo Salsa
Ingredients
- 7 medium tomatillos
- 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and chopped
- 1 clove garlic, peeled and chopped
- 1 medium tomato, peeled, seeded and chopped
- 3 tablespoons chopped cilantro leaves
- ¼ cup finely chopped onion
- 1 teaspoon lime or lemon juice
I broiled the tomatillos, then rough chopped everything and threw it in the food processor. The recipe says to throw it in a blender, but I think a food processor would work better if you have one.
I forgot to take a picture before I hit the pulse button, so I only have the final tomatillo salsa. With all the vegetable goodness in there it gets 3 stars on the Guiding Stars program.
Here’s the final platter. I combined everything in a large casserole dish, and added some corn chips for dipping. I usually dig out some of the bread and put the dips in the center of the bread. This bread turned out so perfect I couldn’t bear to do it! You can even see the threads on the football. Most of them aren’t that clear.
I think I’m also going to make some football deviled eggs, football cupcakes, and maybe some Superbowl party decorations. If I do I’ll be back to share the recipes, photos and instructions!

WOW! What a great spread. What time should I be at your house? LOL!
I am an appetizer freak. Honestly, I could go to a restaurant and eat apps for a meal, and I do it at home quite often. Those look GREAT!!
That’s awesome! The cheesy bread sounds so yummy, and I love the pan 😀
