Oz the Great and Powerful is one of the movies I most look forward to seeing this year! It’s hitting movie theaters in just a couple weeks, and I can’t wait! One of my all time favorite Oz characters is Glinda The Good Witch, so I thought I’d make a Glinda the Good doll cake in her honor. This cake would be fun for an Oz The Great and Powerful party, or to make and surprise a Glinda The Good fan for the movie premiere. It’s not a difficult cake to make! I promise, it’s way easier than you might think!
I modeled the cake after the Glinda the Good Doll from Disney.
How to Make a Glinda The Good Doll Cake
Materials:
- Wilton Wonder Cake Mold Kit
- Wilton Blonde Doll Pick
- 2 inch strand of decorative beads
- 1 1/2 cake mix and accompanying ingredients
- butter cream icing
- red food color
- gold edible glitter (optional)
- 10 inch round cake board
- cake foil wrap
- Wilton #97 tip
- Wilton #5 or another small round tip
- 2 Pastry bags
- toothpick
- a small piece of white gum paste or fondant (or a small piece of card stock will work)
Instructions:
1. Bake 1 1/2 cake mixes in the Wonder cake mold. Follow the package directions to put the mold together. The box calls for one cake mix, but I’ve found it makes a nicer cake if you use about 1 1/3 to 1 1/2 cake mixes. I usually use the left over batter to make some cupcakes!
2. Bake the cake according to the package directions, then turn it out on a cooling rack to cool completely.
3. While the cake is cooling cover a 10 inch round cake board with foil wrap.
4. Mix up a bath of butter cream icing, or use your own favorite decorative white icing.
5. Color 1/2 cup of the butter cream icing with red food color and set it aside.
6. Use a small fondant star cutter, or another small star template to cut out a small star from a 1/4 inch thick piece of gum paste for Glinda’s wand. If you don’t have any gum paste or fondant you can also cut the star from a small piece of card stock, and glue it to the tip of the toothpick.
7. Insert the toothpick into the gum paste star and set it aside.
8. To make Glinda’s crown wrap the decorative strand of beads around the top of her head and her hair. Fasten it in the back with a needle and a piece of string, or a small dot of glue.
9. Use a decorator spatula to put a small amount of icing in the center of your cake board. This icing will help hold the cake in place.
10. Level off the top of the cake, then flip it over so the wide part of the cake is the base and place it on the cake board.
11. Ice the cake with white icing.
12. Let the iced cake sit for 15 minutes to 1/2 hour, then use a piece of wax paper to smooth the icing. If the icing sticks to the wax paper wait another 15 to 20 minutes and try again.
13. Insert the doll pick into the top of the cake.
14. Ice the doll pick’s torso, and arms to match Glinda’s dress.
15. Let the icing dry, then smooth it with wax paper and your fingers until it is the shape and smoothness you want.
16. Use the small round decorator tip and a pastry bag to pipe a border around Glinda’s neckline. Add a small dot in the front center to finish it off.
17. Use the Wilton #97 or a similar tip on a pastry bag to pipe a red ruffle around the base of Glinda’s dress. I wiggled the tip back and forth to create the ruffle look.
18. Use a small amount of icing, or a dot of glue to fasten Glinda’s wand into her hand.
19. Optional: Add some gold edible glitter, or white cake sparkles to the top of Glinda’s dress to give it a shimmer. I like the cake sparkles better, the glitter wanted to clump a little on her dress.
That’s it! Now you have your own Glinda The Good Doll Cake!
