We had the opportunity to travel to Williamsburg Virginia a couple years ago. It was a wonderful learning experience for the whole family. My favorite part is going back in time in Colonial Williamsburg. It’s a wonderful place to see what it was like in the era where Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington walked the streets.
I love strolling down the street in Market Square, and visiting all the shops and buildings. The people are so friendly, especially with the kids. They’re always quick to get them into some trivia, or into a game that’s nothing like the modern day video game!
We also took a couple of the tours while we were there, and visited some of the museum exhibitions. It’s a great way to reacquaint yourself and your family with our country’s history. One of my favorite buildings to tour is the Capitol Building. It was really neat to see inside! There is quite a bit to see and do in Williamsburg Virginia. We stopped for a couple days a few years ago on our way home from the Outer Banks and we didn’t get to see and do everything. We could have stayed longer!
One thing you do want to do is wear comfortable shoes! There’s plenty of walking to do to check out all the buildings inside and out. You’ll also want to make sure you dress for the weather. When we went it was really warm during the day but cool in the morning so we dressed in layers.
There are plenty of kids activities, including reenactments, games, the chance to learn dances, and learn about the clothes they wore during the time period. My nephew got to play a rock game with one of the townspeople. They had to remove one, two or three rocks, and whoever removed the last rock won the game. The kids also got to participate in learning how the troops assembled. It’s definitely a wonderful place for kids to enjoy interactive, hands on learning.
Oh, and if the kids aren’t behaving, there’s always the stockade. Hah!
The Governor’s Palace was another must see stop. The palace itself was beautiful, but I loved the gardens! We went in the summer while everything was in full bloom. I’d love to go back to see it again sometime. Actually we’re planning to stop again on our way to the Outer Banks to check out some of the things we missed on our last trip. I’d love to take my son back now that he’s a few years older, so he’ll remember more of the experience.
