How To Make a Bears and Bees Cake

My sister and I made this bears and bees cake for a baby shower this weekend, but it would also make a really cute first birthday, or Winnie The Pooh party cake.

    bear and bee cake

    Here’s how we made it:

    What you’ll need~

Wilton Stand Up Cuddly Bear Cake Pan Set

    • Wilton Stand Up Cuddly Bear Cake Pan Set (to make the bear)
    • Wilton Wonder Mold Set 4pc (to make the skep)
    • Wilton Decorator Preferred Sheet Pan-11x15x2 (for the base)
    • Wilton Decorating Tip 233/Ateco 133
    • Decorating Tip Set 2/Pkg-#12 Round/#21 Star (round for the skep, star for the border)
    • dowel rod to hold the bear in place
    • Toothpicks or wires to float the bees in the air
    • Wilton Golden Yellow Icing Color ~ for the skep and bees
    • Wilton Brown Icing Color (for the bear)
    • Black food color for the bears eyes, and the stripes on the bees
    • Diaper pins for the bears diaper
    • Gum Paste (for the bees)
    • Butter Cream Icing (click for the recipe)

    How To Make The Cake:

    1. Bake all three cakes in whatever flavor you’d like. Check each cake pan’s instructions for how many cups of cake batter you need to fill them and bake according to recipe instructions.
    2. Make your gumpaste bees a couple days before you will be adding them to the cake. To make the bees color a ping pong ball size lump of gumpaste with the Golden Yellow coloring, by working it in with your hands. Then make the bees by forming small capsule like (and size) yellow bodies (we made 8).
    3. Paint stripes and eyes on the bee with black food coloring.
    4. Roll out a small amount of gumpaste, and use a small round mold to make the wings. I used the small round cutter from Wilton’s Oval Fondant Cutter Set.
    5. “Glue” the wings to the bee with a small artists paint brush, dipped in a little vanilla. Dab a tiny drop of vanilla on the wings, and press them to the bee’s body.
    6. Poke a small wire, or toothpicks into the bottom of the bees so they can fly over the cake.
    7. Once the cakes have cooled completely you can give the base cake a coat of the butter cream icing. We used yellow on the sides, and white on the top.
    8. Make the border around the cake with the star tip. This cake had a scallop border on the bottom, and a rope border on top.
    9. Unmold the skep cut the top of the cake (bottom of the skep) so it is level and position it where you want it on the base.
    10. Coat the skep with a base coating of yellow icing, then use the number 12 round tip to make the cording on the skep.
    11. Use a small amount of brown icing to make a door in the skep.
    12. I left the back part of the bear mold on the bear while I decorated the front, since this is a very unstable cake when it’s setting up.
    13. Ice the diaper, bottoms of his feet, mouth, nose, and inside the ears with a cake decorating spatula.
    14. Use Wilton tip 233 to make the hair on the rest of his body.
    15. When you finish taking the mold off the bear, leave the middle piece inside the bear.
    16. When you have your cake in its final resting place, right before the party, take the bear out of the mold and place it on the cake. Put a dollop of icing under his bottom so he doesn’t sit back too far, and put two dow rods in the cake to set him on to help hold him in place.
    17. Decorate the back of the bear, finish his diaper, and add hair.
    18. Use the same tip you used on the skep to put honey drips on the bear.
    19. Stick the bees into the bear, base and skep.

If you have any questions let me know!

This would be a great cake for a bear party, or if you made the bear honey brown it would be great for a Winnie the Pooh theme party.
